    Jazz programs abound

January 1985 – Did KJZZ get done in by KPLU? Logic says anyone serious about music would prefer to listen to a Jazz station with a decent signal, no static, and in Stereo. Those are the reasons radio pundits say AM radio is losing out to FM stations. Anyhow KPLU 88.5 has recently increased its weekend broadcast schedule so it is on 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. Mostly Classical KUOW 94.9 retains Jazz at 11 at 11 p.m. Saturdays while KBCS 91.3, Bellevue Community College’s student-run station, already mostly Jazz, trims back Saturday Folk music to introduce a six-hour segment at 2 p.m. called Pop Jazz. And KEZX 98.9 finally came out of the closet. It has been playing Jazz all along. This month KEZX introduced a nightly 2 hour program The KEZX Jazz show that serves up proof. The new disc jockey show draws from the wide assortment of Jazz, old and new, already played on the station, but not previously acknowledged as such…Perhaps it’s the beginning of a cycle. 4 years ago there were nearly a dozen places to tune for occasional Golden Age radio series. Then there were none. Sunday KPLU 88.5 reintroduces 2 comedy series’ Fibber McGee and Molly at 7 p.m. and You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx at 7:30. The character of Fibber McGee and Molly were created in 1935 by Jim Jordan and Marian Jordan. The program was an NBC Tuesday night mainstay until 1952 and introduced at least one everlasting image into audio lexicon. Fibber McGee’s closet – with a sequence of sound effects that ends in a tinkling little bell.
